Figure Skating Programs
Junior Development
This program is geared for athletes aged 8 and under who are interested in figure skating. Figure skating skills are introduced through a group lesson format in a positive and fun atmosphere.
Recommendation: Two days per week. Private lessons are also available to supplement skill development through our Junior Freeskate Program.
Private Lesssons
The private lesson program begins with young athletes who are ready to meet the challenge of private lessons along with off-ice classes and group lessons. Assignment to sessions is based on skating tests passed.
Through the comprehensive on-ice programming, athletes at the Derrick Skating Club can focus their training along two figure skating streams:
- Test Skating/StarSkate: Skaters of all levels have opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of free skate, skating skills, ice dance and interpretive skating in a progressive and sequential manner. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada tests through a nationally standardized testing system.
- Competitive Skate: Skaters who want to challenge their figure skating skills and show potential as competitive skaters can participate and have the opportunity to advance through the qualifying championship system. The competitive program incorporates a series of tests and training opportunities to help competitors reach their goals. This program enables skaters with potential to advance from provincial to national championships and beyond.
Off-Ice Training
Off-ice training is an important component of our skating program. Programs run four days each week and include fitness, jump and ballet. All skaters enrolled in our private programs are required to participate.
