Learn-to-Skate

PreCANSKATE is for skaters three to five years of age with very little or no skating experience. The program offers group lessons focusing on basic movements such as pushing, gliding, falling and getting up. Children advance through four stages and progress to CanSkate. All skaters must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice.

CANSKATE is for skaters who have completed PreCanSkate or are five years of age or older. This program focuses on the fundamental movements of skating through interactive group lessons. Children advance through six stages. This program prepares skaters for recreational skating, hockey or figure skating. All skaters must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should the skaters wear?

Comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement is best. Nothing too bulky. A small pair of gloves is good, Skates should fit well. CSA-approved hockey helmets are mandatory. A face guard is recommended.

How do the programs run?

Skaters assemble in pre-assigned color groups. Lessons are taught by professional coaches and certified Canskate coaches. Parents are not permitted on the ice and must remain in the arena during the session.

What do the colors mean?

We use color groupings to arrange the children with others of similar skill and age. Note that there may be more than one color group working on the same stage. Therefore, if your child moves from one group to another, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the he/she has completed a stage.

How does coaching work?

DSC coaches are Skate Canada professionals who have been trained through the National Coaching Certification Program. They all hold a current First Aid Certificate, Police Check and “Persons of Trust” check.

Can I request private lessons?

Private lessons can be arranged with the professional coach of your choice for the first 10 minutes of the session. Please speak with a coach to discuss fees and scheduling.

What is I miss a session?

It is a DSC policy to maintain low coach-to-skater ratios in all groups on all sessions. We are therefore unable to offer make-up sessions.

Where to go from here?

PreCanSkate skaters progress into our Canskate program. Once a skater has completed Stage Four of the Canskate program, they may be interested in either the Junior Development Program or our Private Lesson program. For more information, speak to a professional coach.
